The Westchester Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1445 S. Mannheim Road in the early morning hours of February 11, 2025, working alongside police officers to ensure the safe evacuation of all residents.
At 1:52 a.m., fire crews were initially dispatched to what appeared to be a routine fire alarm activation. However, while en route to the scene, responders learned that Westchester Police Department officers had already arrived and discovered an active fire in a second-floor apartment of the four-unit residential building.
Police officers immediately entered the building to alert occupants and assist with evacuation as residents were already beginning to leave the structure. Fire crews, supported by neighboring departments from MABAS Division 20, worked to extinguish the blaze and conduct a thorough search of the building to ensure all occupants were safely evacuated.
Due to the severity of the incident, a box alarm was activated, bringing additional fire crews and investigators to the scene to assist with suppression efforts and determine the cause of the fire.
The building sustained significant damage as a result of the fire. The American Red Cross responded to provide temporary housing assistance to the displaced residents. One building occupant was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The collaboration between Westchester Police and Fire departments, along with mutual aid from neighboring communities, helped ensure a swift response that prioritized resident safety during this early morning emergency.
