Our Story
Since 1925, the Village of Westchester has been a place where neighbors become family β a proud community built on shared values, civic pride, and a commitment to progress.
The Founding Vision
Westchester’s story begins in the early 1920s when developers envisioned a model English-style suburban community west of Chicago — offering families room to grow while keeping the city within easy reach. On December 14, 1925, the Village of Westchester was officially incorporated, setting the stage for a century of community.
Early Roots Take Hold
The first Village Hall opened in 1931, and the young community began establishing its identity. Through the Great Depression and World War II, Westchester residents demonstrated the resilience and neighborly spirit that would come to define the village for generations.
The Post-War Boom
The post-war housing boom transformed Westchester into a thriving suburb. New families arrived in droves, schools were built, and the village developed the infrastructure and community services that residents depend on to this day. This era cemented Westchester’s reputation as a great place to raise a family.
A Maturing Community
Westchester continued to evolve — expanding its parks, modernizing public services, and strengthening the civic engagement that makes the village special. The community became known for its excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and the kind of small-town warmth that’s hard to find so close to a major city.
Modern Westchester
Today, Westchester is home to approximately 16,000 residents and continues to invest in its future — from infrastructure improvements and economic development to embracing technology in municipal services. The village honors its founders’ vision while meeting the needs of a 21st-century community.
