Westchester Fire Department Issues Important Safety Reminder for Proper Ash and Ember Disposal

The Westchester Fire Department has issued an important public safety announcement regarding the proper disposal of hot embers and ashes to help prevent accidental fires in our community.

To help prevent accidental fires, please remember to dispose of hot embers and ashes safely.

Always place embers from grills, fireplaces, fire pits, and any hot materials into separate, flame resistant metal containers with tight fitting lids.

Important reminders:

  • Never place hot embers in plastic, paper, or cardboard containers.
  • Keep all ash containers well away from homes, garages, decks, and other structures.
  • Allow ashes to cool for at least 48 hours before transferring or disposal.
  • When possible, douse cooled ashes with water and stir to ensure they're fully extinguished.
  • If you have any questions on safe mitigation procedures, please contact Westchester Fire Department at (708) 345-0433.

Your caution helps keep our community safe.

Thank you for doing your part to prevent fires!
